19th century Civilian Somerset saddle. PRICED RIGHT!

This pattern saddle is late 19th to early 20th century but has features similar to war time Somerset pattern saddles. If you want to do a civilian impression and not too concerned about 100% "spot-on" authenticity then this saddle is priced right and will work for you.
19th century period Somerset saddle with wide pommel and cantle rolls. VERY comfortable with a 13 inch seat. The tree is sound. Leather is very good, soft, pliable condition. Could easily be ridden "as is" but the under-skirting leather is torn that needs a little work and it needs a girth assembly. Not problematic.

**Additional photos of the underside availabe for serious inquirers.

"Used" Reproduction M1859 Federal McClellan saddle tree

Here is an opportunity to buy a scarce "wide body" M1859 repro tree "ready to be finished". This tree was made by the same Georgia tree maker that made so many of the M1859's during the 90's and 2000's. It is made with the modern quarter horse bars (which is why it is being sold as it did not fit the seller's gaited horse) and includes a 13 1/2 inch seat. In used but not abused conidtion.
Tree has all of the holes for finishing including for mortice plates, footman stands, iron stirrups strap hanger-loop, etc. The brass rings should be iron for Federal enlited and could easily be replaced or, if you have an officer's impression....leave them as is.
Tree is sound, rawhide is correct, complete and shows now tears.

Trees are VERY HARD to find right now. Few folks are making them and many insist you buy a finished saddle at much higher costs. Buy this to replace your M1904 or to finish yourself.

18th/19th Century CROWN SOAP!!!

18th/ 19th Century Crown Soap!!

Crown Soap goes back centuries....at least into the middle 1700's. It was an extrememly popular soap for cleaning leather during the 19th century. Advertisements are routinely found in period newspapers and magazines. Harness makers often made their own soap for local sale often from closely guarded secret recipes.

In fact, Benjamin Franklin’s father Josiah Franklin was a candle and soap maker. He made Crown Soap. By using salt he improved the recipe and made famously fine bars of soap with a crown stamped on them. The formula was a strict family secret, and a source of family discord when one of Benjamin’s sisters let it out.

We are now offering period Crown Soap for cleaning leather. Our soap is from a period recipe for leather soap commonly used by mid-19th century harness makers. NOTE: It is NOT like modern saddle soaps but instead is mostly made from cod oil as were most period recipes. Our period soap recipe will clean the leather but not be harsh enough to damage the leather.

All your leather items should be cleaned with soap several times a year in order to prevent the build up of dirt and other things that will damage the grain surface. For directions for period Leather Care......See our article (by David Janagin and myself) on this web site under...”Feature Articles by Ken R Knopp” ....... click on.... ”The Reenactor’s Guide to Leather Care in the 19th Century”

Cost: Crown Soap (4 oz. Tin) $7 plus shipping

Original Iron Spurs!! ON SALE NOW!

Really cool original (almost identically matching) pair of 19th century iron spurs in excellent condition.

Iron spurs like this were very common. According to spur experts the squared strap ends date back to the 1820's or 1830's. They are military in appearance. However, most of the common, well known Federal and Confederate spurs were made of brass so this is more of a civilian type although they have strong similarities to military patterns.

These spurs are in great condition! They are NOT an exactly matching pair but nearly so. Both are of iron, both the same size, shape, etc. (although the photo makes one look bigger than the other they are the very same size). One spur is dug from a Civil War site (according to the person I bought it from though he could not tell me where). It is clearly a dug spur, has some rust pitting one one shank and the rowel has one tooth missing and one slightly bent (see photo). The other is non dug and has a very slightly larger spur rowel. Hardly noticeable (the photo makes it look bigger than it is). Both have free rolling rowels and are strong, sturdy (not fragile)and ready to use lacking only a set of spur straps.

GUARANTEED SATISFACTION!!!

COST: $85 plus shipping. Usually around $5
Sorry, iron spur pairs are getting VERY hard to find!!

Original Period Civilian Horse Brush!!

Another very well made civilian layered leather horse brush using the old wire drawing method. This is a very old pattern, Mid to late 19th century commercial leather brush. Made in the style and patterns common to CW war time construction. These type leather backed horse brushes were made for Federal army issue and civilian use in very large numbers both in England and here in the U.S. This one has a period-typical embossed motif of a circle and horse head on both ends at the top of the leather back. The leather back and bristles are strong, soft and pliable however, it is missing the leather hand strap (easily added). Nevertheless, the entire brush is solid, durable and completely useable. Measures 8 1/2 x 4 1/4 inches.

NOTE: These are getting exceedingly difficult and rare to find.

For a collector’s item or for reenacting!

COST: I bought this cheap so it is for sale at the extra good price of ONLY $30 including shipping in the continental US only. Elsewhere extra.

MATCHING PAIR!!!!...........
These are NOT rosettes nor military but civilian for the 19th century. They were buckle covers placed on the riding or coach bridle to cover the buckles and intended to prevent the horses tail hair from being snagged and pulled out by the tongues of the buckles and as a means to decoratively cover ordinary harness buckles. Often found at the place of the bridle buckles, rosettes or on other harness buckles especially in service on the coach team. Very decorative.
Excellent condition and serviceable! Will accommodate a 1-1/8 inch or smaller strap.

ORIGINAL KILGORE SADDLE TREE!!

SOLD!!!

Folks, here's a RARE! chance to own an original mid-19th century Kilgore tree. PREFECT TO BE MADE INTO A CIVILIAN, CONFEDERATE TROOPER's OR WAR TIME OFFICER'S SADDLE!
The Kilgore was NOT a military McClellan saddle though they are very similar. The Kilgore tree was developed for the civilian market just before the CW. They are known to be different in their length of bars and often other features including the shape of their pommel and cantle. This one is very similar to a Mac but has a lower cantle and (great for us....) a wide gullet and more flat bars at the rear. In other words, this one will easily accommodate a modern horse!!
By the looks of this I do not think this was ever finished. It shows no nail or screw holes anywhere and no wear and tear. The tree is very sound but the rawhide is dried and pulling apart in a few places (and shows some rodent damage) so if it is to be rebuilt I would recommend it be re-rawhided. Contact either Doug Kidd or Karl Pepper.

A very light weight saddle tree, it has a twelve (12) inch seat and also sports the original and CORRECT wartime type iron loop stirrup strap hangers.

VERY CORRECT AND AUTHENTIC FOR THE PERIOD!!

Buy it and make a western Confederate trooper's McClellan (with no strap plates), a Federal or CS officer's mac or,....a civilian saddle of the period.

FOLKS, AUTHENTIC SADDLE TREES ARE EXCEEDINGLY DIFFICULT TO FIND TODAY. HERE IS A RARE CHANCE TO HAVE AN ORIGINAL THAT WITH LITTLE EFFORT WILL BE "SPOT-ON" FOR ANY IMPRESSION.

COST: Look!! I know times are tough and it will cost someone a few more bucks to have this re-rawhided but, I want someone to buy this and make a good authentic saddle of it. So, I am dropping the price from $225 to $165 shipping Included!!

SORRY SOLD BUT...I GET THESE IN FROM TIME TO TIME. INQUIRE OR CONTACT ME FOR AN ADVANCE ORDER.
This is an original 19th century "pair" of spurs but not a matching pair. Although VERY close they are not exactly matching if you look real close you can see the difference. Which is why they are priced so cheap! Regardless, they will work fine for your civilian or early CS impression.
Strong, sturdy with free rolling rowels they come with their original spur straps!!

Great condition, sturdy, solid and strong, missing only the lower slobber bar. It has a casting flaw easily seen in the photo but this does not hurt its strength or appearance. Guaranteed or your money back! The bit appears silver but is not painted. Apparently someone cleaned this bit right down to the bare metal. I wasn’t sure myself so tried stripping it then even using a bit of muratic acid but quickly discovered it was simply bare ass metal. A little use will quickly put a nice “field patina” back on it.

Has a four and ¾ inch low port mouthpiece (interior width).

PERFECT YOUR IMPRESSION!! Original M1859’s are very hard to find- especially in a low port. Perfect for an early war Federal or CS impression but good for any period of the war. Want a real “authentic” enhancement to your Federal (or Confederate) impression? This is your bit!! Cheaply priced!!

Original (kinda) Civilian "snake cheek" bit....

SORRY!! SOLD!!

ORIGINAL/REPRODUCTION SNAKE CHEEK BIT!!

Here is an interesting bit and really cool bit to enhance your Confederate impression. This was originally an M1892 US Cavalry bit. Someone has gone to a lot of trouble to make it look like an early British (or Colonial) or US Dragoon appearing bit by hand forging a very nice “snake cheek” curve into the cheek piece. This type of cheek piece is normally seen on very early American or British bits of the late 1700’s to about the 1860’s or, on 1840’ – 50’s U.S. Dragoon bits. Who ever did it went to a lot of trouble and did a very nice job! The bit is well made to begin with and the extra work is also sturdy and solid.

COOL IMPRESSION! If you are looking to portray an impression of a volunteer Confederate cavalryman or CS officer in the field (or a civilian) with his home made, blacksmith forged copy of fancy early civilian or British bit or Dragoon “snake cheek” bit then this is a very unique and rare opportunity to have the perfect bit to enhance that look!

The bit was originally an M1892, #2 pattern. It measures 8 ¼ inches in length with a low port mouthpiece that measures 4 ½ inches interior width. It was once painted but most of it is worn off now. The “US” and “2” can still very faintly be seen.
SOLD!!!!

This bit will look fantastic on any civilian or Confederate bridle for someone wanting to uniquely enhance that Confederate or civilian impression for any period of the war!

COST $$ plus shipping CHEAP!!

Original British "Pad" Bit!!

HEY!! STILL AVAILABLE!!! ...................

British "Pad" Bit of the 1860 pattern.
This is NOT a reproduction!! No! It is an all original British Colonial bit direct out of the Royal State Palace in India!

I just got this in from India!! It has some funky Indian brass knobs on it (removable) but it is certainly a British pad bit on the 1860 military pattern- though probably post war (given its size). Obviously it needs a new stabilize bar and some slight straightening both of which can be easily accomplished by a competent blacksmith.

The overall length is a little over 8 inches. Interior width of the medium port mouthpiece is 4- 5/8 inches wide. It is in solid condition and quite easily useable!

I am selling this "as is" for the price below but, if desired I will have my "smithy" add the bar and straighten it for $50 more (my cost for shipping, labor etc.) if I have to get the work done.

Don't miss your chance at this bit!! These RARELY come available on the mkt for less than $250 to $500 and then rarely one you would then want to ride with. Since its not complete this one is a great reenactor piece or a collectible!

Hey! Some enterprising and talented guy could purchase this bit add a couple of "C" bosses from Hanover Brass and make easily himself a "C" boss Confederate officer's bit!

Available NOW!! For the first time since April of 1865!!!........ The Confederate Selma Arsenal bit!

The only documented, “arsenal-specific” Confederate issue cavalry bit. Copied from an original in my collection that was excavated from the Alabama River at the site of the CS arsenal!
As Wilson's Federal Cavalry approached Selma Ala. in March of 1865, the arsenal operatives were ordered to destroy equipment and machinery. What could not be transported away was thrown into the adjacent Alabama river. Over 100 yrs later, underwater excavations revealed literally tons of artifacts including machinery, weapons, gun parts, anything that was not dissolved by time....including a few cavarly bits. This hand crafted bit has similarities to the CS copy of the Federal Dragoon bit and the M1859 but was made by arsenal blacksmiths including slave and white operatives at the arsenal and occaisionally by contract from local suppliers.
Interestingly, NO other blacksmith made Confederate bit can be specifically identified to a Confederate arsenal!!

This curry comb was patented by the firm North & Judd on June 22, 1909. Made of metal with a leather strap it was the first of the concentrical circle curry combs so often seen today.

NORTH & JUDD Mfg. Co.: New Britain Conn., North & Judd. Established in 1876 this firm made a lot of equestrian equipment. North & Judd were a result of a merger with the firm of O.B. North, a large Connecticut war time maker of Federal horse equipment such as bridle bits, picket pins, saddlery hardware and carbine sling swivels. In 1878 North & Judd began using the “anchor” symbol as their maker’s mark- a well known symbol to today’s collectors. Interestingly, in 1926 North & Judd bought out the New Jersey firm of August Buermann Mfg. Co. Established in 1842, Buermann was itself a maker of horse equipment for the Federal government during the war.
The company was acquired in 1967 by Gulf and Western Industries and for a while continued manufacturing saddlery, hardware, auto hardware, and belt and razor strap hardware. They are still in business today in Middletown Ct. as North & Judd Holding Company manufacturing plastic plumbing fixtures.

Measures 6 1/2 inches by 4 inches.

Another very well made of layered leather using the old wire drawing method. This is a mid to late 19th to early 20th century commercial leather brush but made in the style and patterns common to CW war time construction. These leather backed horse brushes were made for Federal army issue and civilian use in very large numbers both in England and here in the U.S. This one has a period-typical embossed motif of a horseman jumping a fence at the top of the leather back and the number #20 on the hand strap. The leather back and bristles are soft and pliable. The leather strap is in excellent condition too! In fact, the entire brush is solid, durable completely useable. Measures 8 1/2 x 5 inches.

NOTE: These are getting exceedingly difficult and rare to find.

For a collector’s item or for reenacting!

M1896 McCLELLAN CAVALRY SADDLE.....RARE SPANISH AMERICAN WAR ERA SADDLE!

SOLD!!! Sorry!!

M1896 McCLELLAN CAVALRY SADDLE.....RARE SPANISH AMERICAN WAR ERA SADDLE!!

This is a nice example of the Spanish American War era Model 1896 McClellan Saddle, the last of the “black leather McClellans”. Introduced on the eve of the War with Spain, the Model 1896 McClellan it is a rare saddle, difficult to find and readily sought after by military collectors.
Known to have been manufactured at the Rock Island and San Antonio Arsenals, as well as by at least one civilian contractor, the Model 1896 McClellans were produced in black leather for only some 6 or 7 years, at which point the army changed to using russet leather. This relatively short production period coupled with hard service in tropical climates during the Spanish American War, accounts for a relatively low rate of survival of this saddle in collections today.
This specimen, although showing some age and obviously incomplete without the stirrups has survived in good condition. The leather has some cracking and dry rotting, but is pliable and generally in good condition with a nice shiny surface. The proper quarter straps are all intact but show some repairs and dry rotting and does NOT have the safes on either side. All of the brass hardware including the coat strap mortise plates, foot loops, staples and rings are present and intact. The stirrups are missing but the original stirrup straps with proper buckle are intact although one is broken.
Overall this is a good “starter” for the collector to own the most important component of a very rare saddle, and one that is difficult to obtain and seldom found in American Military saddle collections.

UNIQUE, MATCHING PAIR OF BRASS 19TH CENTURY HEART ROSETTES!

This pair is unlike most you see. Very unusual. They are a bit smaller overall and, the heart center is much smaller than most heart rosettes you commonly see out there. A rare pattern, they were not mass produced but they are a matching set that measures 1 ½ inches in diameter. Both hearts have dents in them so they are not in perfect shape but they are very solid and show a heavy patina. For the collector or, reenactor...., clean them up and put them on your bridle for a really neat 19th century civilian look.

Original 19th Century Somerset Saddle- Good condition!

SOLD!!! SORRY...IF YOU SEE IT BUY IT! DONT WAIT OR YOU WILL CERTAINLY MISS IT!
Here is a sweet, period Somerset saddle in good condition. This very typical 19th century pattern "riding" saddle has a 11 to 12 inch seat built on a solid English Somerset tree, real pig skin skirting!, heavy oak wood stirrups and canvas underpadding. Good as a common civilian "riding saddle" for any period of the 19th century

Now, this is a "fixer-upper". I could fix this up myself and make a bit more money but if someone wants to buy this "as is" and do so themselves it would be easy and it is priced right at $200. (If you would rather have me do it then the cost goes up another $200 or so)
Actually it is nearly ready to ride right now lacking only new billet straps for the girth (and of course a girth). The seat leather is very pliable and not torn anywhere though it shows a bit of wear at the top of the cantle. Skirting leather is solid and also in good condition. The stirrup straps are not original to the saddle (I think the wood stirrups are however) but the leather seems strong though the buckles are wrong for our period and the straps need some oiling. The underpadding has been replaced at some point with some striped "ticking" type canvas but is strong, serviceable and not pulling apart or torn anywhere (unlike most you find these days). The one area it needs some re-inforcement would be where the skirts attach to the seat. They are pulling apart a bit but it is not serious and could be fixed by a competent saddler. Regardless, I do not think they would pull apart from the saddle under normal riding but you probably would want to fix it right so it does not stress over time.

All in all, a very solid, well made saddle representative of a typical civilian saddle for anytime in the 19th century and priced right for use by a reeanctor or as a collectible wall hanger.

Original 19th Century Somerset Saddle!

SOLD!!!! SORRY, the good stuff goes fast and this was "sooooo fine"!
Original 19th Century Somerset Saddle! Excellent riding condition!!! The quilted seat leather is in excellent, supple, almost like new condition! Note the quilt stitch pattern and stitch down seat and, the long tapered skirts. Difficult to tell from this photo but the seat is a very pretty light chocolate brown color and the skirt a bit darker brown. The stirrup straps are black in the photo but they have been made and treated to fade to a chocolate brown just like the seat. The tree is sound, the under padding has been completely re-done with pillow ticking (durable, no tears or holes), the English rigging re-done with new leather billet straps and it has brand new stirrup straps using original 19th century civilian style iron roller buckles from my collection.

Saddle in WOW!! Condition!! used but NO tears, rodent holes or pulled stitches. This saddle is ready to ride lacking only a girth and a different pair of stirrups!

** NOTE: The original (and rare) iron Snake "Don't Tread on Me" stirrups are NOT part of the saddle price below UNLESS you want them to be for an extra $200.

Still, a stunningly beautiful original stitch down Somerset saddle for your collection or.... its ready to ride right now! Hey! Finding original saddles in this good of a condition is nearly impossible. You wont find them!! And, Stuart Lily would charge you $2,000 to make a reproduction quilted seat saddle like this. It can be yours ready to ride for...

Cost: $675 plus shipping (Hey!! Cheaper than a brand new repro McClellan!! And good for any 19th century time period)

**More photos available upon request. Serious inquiries only.

M1860 German Double Rein Military Bit

M1860 German Double Rein Military Bit with original double gig curb chain:

Fine condition. I am told these are the M1860 German bit. They certainly have the typical high quality German construction, look and mouthpiece. My understanding is that a large number of these came out of a lot in the late 1990's from some cache of military items. Covered in rust, when they hit the collector’s mkts in the early 2000's someone had cleaned them with a grinder and brush wheel. In good condition they unfortunately show the grinder marks on the cheek pieces. Very sturdy, solid and useable for a reenactor. Great for a rare and hard to find collector's item too!!

Measurements: Overall length 7 ½ inches. Interior width of the mouth piece is five inches so easily useable for modern horse.

Cost: $80 Includes shipping.

ORIGINAL CIVILIAN BRIDLE BIT!! Really Cool!

SOLD!!! SORRY!
Here is a really cool (and getting rare) period original civilian bit but of the "trooper's" style. Solid iron construction. Made of flat, cast iron cheek pieces and a hand forged "medium" port bar (and with hand forged rein rings). The brass boss is VERY "period" resembling leather conchos that were very commonly seen on men's bridles of the period.
Excellent condition!! Used but not abused. Very sturdy, very serviceable although it may need a slight straighening by a competent blacksmith.
Overall length from top to bottom is (including rein rings) is 9 1/4 inches. At 1 1/8 (interior) the bridle holes will fit any width bridle billet. The mouth width is 4 7/8's inches (interior) which is serviceable for most modern horses but could easily be spread another quarter inch or so.
This is a great and original period (19th century) bit perfect for reenacting or, for a fine bit collection. Original period and serviceable bits like this are getting VERY hard to find!!

COST: $$00 includes shipping (U.S. Only- others inquire)

ORIGINAL!! British Army 1860 Pattern bit....

SOLD!!! Original British 1860 Army “Pad” bit.

RARE chance to own a British Army issue bit of 1860!! This bit is of the larger, earlier 1860 pattern rather than the smaller pattern issued around WWI. It has British military inspector’s marks and was purchased from a collector in Canada obviously suggesting it as a Canadian/British military importation. Even more interesting, it has two Canadian coins placed as "post-issue" bosses. The coins are commemorative 60th anniversary of Canada coins that were struck in 1927 and, as I understand it, given out to school children across Canada as souvenirs. The coins have the busts of Queen Victoria and King George, the words “Canada” and “Confederation” as well as the dates 1867 and 1927. The coins alone have intrinsic value of about $10-$15.
The bit is very well made and sturdy showing little use although there is an obvious repair (weld) to one cheek piece but this does not weaken the bit or detract from its appearance. The bit has a indiscernible maker’s mark on the low port bar and four other inspector’s marks including the letter “C”, the number “66" and a British broad arrow. It measures 9 and ½ inches overall length including the rein rings and with a mouthpiece of 4 3/4 wide (interior width).
Could be used as a great Confederate import reenactor bit (if you remove the coin bosses) or as a great British/Canadian collector’s piece.
These 1860 British bits rarely come up for sale. When they do the going price is often $250-$500 (considerably more if it would have had a “C” boss). I have a couple of these so I am pricing this to sell quickly.
A rare chance to own a great piece of British/Canadian history or use it for your Confederate impression!

Original Leather Military Horse Brush!!

Hand made of layered leather using the old, wire drawing method. This is a mid to late 19th to early 20th century military pattern leather horse brush. I have often seen this very same pattern marked "US" and "Army".....I have seen these with markings suggesting they were Brtiish Army...so, I am not sure if they were intended for US or British military ...or both but, I can say they were made for military useage. Apparently, these were made in very large numbers cause I still find them from time to time.

The hand strap has the # 2120 clearly marked. The body has a very crisp and clear period-typical embossed motif of a horse atop a crown (suggesting an English origin but that is not conclusive in and of itself as some of these are British marked too.)
Regardless, this one is in excellent, almost like issued condition! I have not seen one is as nice as this in some time. The leather is in wonderful condition, the layered back is thick, strong and pliable. The hand strap is in great condition too and securely sewn and the bristles are secure, very soft and pliable.

Hard to believe this is perhaps 100+ years old!! This brush should provide alot of hard service for the reenactor or last nearly forever for the collector.

Size: 9 x 5 inches

These leather hand brushes are getting exceedingly difficult and rare to find. A great reeanctor or collector's item!

Original M1862 Federal Curry Comb

The M1862 Curry Comb a.k.a. as the “US’, “Army”, “Government” or “Y” Comb. This is the later pattern made after about 1863 or 1864.
The early patterns were often (not always) marked No. “76" and “US” on the tang handle. Unfortunately, the wrought iron shank handles had the tendency to break. This comb is the later war time model that were improved using up to two rivets to attach the iron shank to the comb back and were often marked with “Cast Steel” and “Army Combs” on the “Y”.
This comb was retrieved from the wreck of the artillery barge the “General Meade” in the early 1990's at the site of the 1864 Confederate sabotage explosion on the James River at City Point Va. It is all original and largely intact. Has the markings “Cast Steel” and “Army Combs” faintly but readable on the “Y”. Has been cleaned and preserved but shows obvious signs of being under water for 130 years!

Despite at least one hundred and fifty thousand (likely many more) being made, intact, unexcavated examples are rare birds indeed. I have been looking for these for years and have never found a real, honest, unexcavated original. This one is as close as you will get!! And there is damn few of these.

Hand Forged Confederate Carbine Sling buckle!!

Hand Forged Iron Confederate Carbine Sling buckle!!

The Confederate carbine sling buckle was made for use on a (black or russet) leather sling either with or without a brass tip. Original examples include brass buckles and, hand forged iron buckles like this.
I have seen several original excavated examples of iron buckles. Most are made for the regulation sling width of 2 1/2 inches (interior) although many others were made for a narrower width of leather and, normally with only one tongue.

Our buckles are made by Paul Muller! They are not cast nor machined like some reproductions are today but rather, blacksmith made- hot forged hammered out by hand from raw iron using an anvil and coal fired forge just like the iron originals were during the war. Can be made with one or two tongues. Your choice.

Buy one to make your own sling or,.....replace the farby buckle you now have.

VERY REASONABLY PRICED for hand work!!

Reproduction Federal Nose Bags

Federal Nost Bags

A very necessary and utilitarian piece of equipment for the cavalryman and for artillery teams. Nose bags were made in very large numbers by the Southern Confederacy in both the eastern and western Confederacy. About July of 1863 they were discontinued in the east and there was very little manufacturing noted in the western arsenals after the early war period.
For the Federal army, many tens of thousands were made throughout the war.
Today, for reenactors they are a very useful and necessary item for feeding your horse on the picket line with other horses, preventing waste of feed and carrying additional items on the saddle.
Made by Doug Kidd of Border States Leather these are a reasonably priced, excellent reproduction copy of the Federal nose bag. Made of heavy canvas, with a formed leather bottom and leather strap with roller buckle just as the original pattern. In stock all the time!

Confederate Picket Pins!! - Reproduction

Confederate Picket Pin!!

To our knowledge, No one hand forges these for retail sales. Our CS picket pin is not cast nor machined like most reproductions are today but rather, blacksmith made- hot forged and hammered by hand from raw iron using an anvil and coal fired forge just like the originals were during the war. Made in unknown numbers by blacksmiths and slaves these were used by CS cavalrymen in limited numbers to picket their horses. Originals were fourteen inches long according to the ordnance manual although some were made shorter.

No one makes these for the hobby today as they are very labor-intensive from a highly skilled, quickly fading craftsmanship.

A Paul Muller item made exclusively for www.confederatesaddles.com

One cannot find a more authentically made and very reasonably priced blacksmith made reproduction item like this anywhere in the hobby today.

COST: $22... Shipping is EXTRA!! About $8 Be sure to make extra payment!

M1862 Federal Curry Comb!! ORIGINAL!!!!

SOLD!!!

Matching Pair of “Snake” Cast iron Stirrups.....(Don’t Tread on Me)!!These are early period, (I figure 1830's to 1860's- maybe earlier!! I don't know) These are the coolest of the cool!!! I have never seen a pair like these EVER!! These are originals!! NON-DUG!! Excellent condition! They measure 5 ½ inches high and 5 1/4 inches wide, treads measure 3 3/4 interior dimensions.
Would'nt these be really cool on an original Rev War period or pre-war militia saddle or..... even for Civil War. Could be used for reenacting too but a bit small in the treads!! Traces of silver remain to suggest they once had a silver overlay!!

I don’t know much about these but button guys go nuts over them!! They are made of zinc (I believe) and all in excellent condition with the backs solid. Completely re-usable if you care to. RARE, RARE, RARE!! These are not being re-popped to my knowledge it is RARE to find originals. I purchased them from a digger who digs unusual late 18th and early 19th century sites. He told me he excavated them from Napoleonic battle sites in eastern Europe and some in Mexico that was the dumping ground for surplus European military goods in the early (French for Santa Anna) to mid 19th century (Maxamillion). They are also common to American French and Indian War sites. Sold as a lot ONLY $75 for all of them!

Old Curry Comb similar to Federal M1859 "Y" Comb

Old Curry Comb similar to Federal "Y" Comb

This is not an original. Probably late 19th century but very close to the CW Federal pattern "Y" comb. The handle is tapered far closer to the originals than the later "fat" ones you often see for sale. CW combs normally had narrow sometimes ornate woode handles.
Includes the correct "Y" back strap and is a six row. It has a "step-up" handle unlike the M1859 which was not Civil War but why I am selling it so cheap. Still it is sturdy and a very close pattern to the originals which are getting very hard to find and no one is currently making a good repop of these. So, if you want a good representation of a Federal Curry Comb here's a good inexpensive one!

Confederate Spanish Moss Saddle Blanket!!
SOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
     Yes!! THE REAL DEAL!!!!
One of two known surviving (largely intact) Spanish Moss saddle blankets. This one measures 42 inches wide but of unknown length. It is also of a different weave pattern. This was unearthed at the now famous downtown Nashville site in 1995 with all of the other surviving pieces. I believe that there is only one other larger than this in a private collection. that one is complete in length and width measuring about the same width and 62 inches in length.

It is in great condition but needs restoration.

A nice large example of a ultra rare Confederate artifact.

CS Gov't "Tax in Kind" Bags (Reproduction)

CS Gov't "Tax in Kind" Bags (Reproduction)

** Only a few left!!
These bags were provided by the Confederate government to farmer's so that they may be used to pay their 10% "tax in kind" in goods such as grain, corn, wheat, corn meal, vegetables, etc.

Les Jenson says that thousands of these were produced by the CS gov't but only three or so are known to have survived. One at the Confederate Museum in Richmond, one at Gettysburg NPS that has only the front half and, one in a private collection.
The originals came in at least two measurements. Either 22 in. wide and 32 in. tall or... 22 x 27 inches. Each with stenciling reading either "The Confederate States" or "Confederate States" and a draw string at the top for closure. One of these can be found on page 214 of the CS Volume of Echoes of Glory. It shows what's identified as a 'Confederate flour bag'. The dimensions on it are 22" x 27" and the stencil, while reading 'Confederate States', is different.
These reproductions are very strong and serviceable. Made of heavy cotton twill, measuring 22 x 27 inches, with a hemp draw string and with black ink stenciling just like the originals. See a copy of an original on this web site under Photo Galleries, "More Confederate and Other Period Horse Equipment"
While not necessarily an item of CS cavalry/artillery "issue", its certainly Confederate and certainly "issue" of another kind. It is common sense that many of these would have made it into the field via the quartermaster for issue of rations to the armies.
Buy one to dress up your field or camp impression, to carry your rations, or just to haul your reenactment "stuff"!

* All of my "used" ones are gone. "New" available only.

ORIGINAL FORREST CAVALRY RELICS!!

Very displayable riker box of Forrest Cavalry and other unique CS cavalry relics Relics!! These are the real thing with three items excavated from Forrest and Van Dorns Spring 1863 camp sites around Coumbia Tenn. It is rare and difficult to find CS cavalry groupings with NB Forrest provenance.

GUARANTEED ORIGINAL!!

1. Brass Confederate Spur. This is the shank from a Confederate-made spur excavated from Forrest and Van Dorn’s 1863 Cavalry Camps around Columbia Tennessee. This was excavated in 2009 by local area relic hunter Bill Thrasher.

2. Iron horse shoe bridle buckle excavated from middle Tennessee Confederate camp. These cast iron 3/4 inch buckles the most common buckle used for CS cavalryman “trooper’s” bridles.

3. Zinc mortice plate typically used on some western Confederate arsenal saddles. Excavated from CS site in Tennessee.

4. Strand of twisted Spanish Moss from CS saddle blanket excavated from downtown Nashville in 1996. Several pieces and at least one blanket along with a significant number of other Federal and CS relics were found twenty-one feet below the surface at this site now where the Nashville Titans Arena stands.

5. Trigger. This trigger, likely from some kind of civilian fowling piece was excavated from Forrest and Van Dorn’s 1863 Cavalry Camps around Columbia Tennessee. Excavated in 2009 by local relic hunter Bill Thrasher.

6. Brass case pistol cartridge from the French pin-fire Lafaucheaux pistol excavated from Forrest and Van Dorn’s 1863 Cavalry Camps around Columbia Tennessee. This was excavated in 2009 by local relic hunter Bill Thrasher. These pistols were a favorite of Confederate officers. In February 1864 Forrest rec’d about 1700 of these pistols that had come through the Blockade at Mobile. Still more of this same shipment were sent to the Trans-Mississippi Dept. Of the number sent Forrest, many still appear in his comprehensive May 1864 Inspection Report but due to the inherent difficulty in obtaining ammunition for them fewer and fewer of these pistols are found in subsequent reports.

7. Hand forged iron Horse Shoe from Confederate Camp in middle Tennessee.

SUPERB! Confederate Cavalry Relics!

19th Century Curry Comb #7

Selling off my collection of 19th Century Curry Combs. These are NOT Antebellum or Civil War era but really unique and hard to find original curry combs from the 19th to early 20th centuries. I have been collecting and researching these for years. Let me tell you, they are rare and very difficult to find patterns. Get them while you can!

Another well made and rare curry comb this one was probably made by the F.E. Kohler firm of Canton Oh. in the 1880's or 90's. It is of their pattern and style although an early pattern. The Kohler firm was a prolific maker of curry combs for retail sale all over America. It is a steel (somewhat rusted), closed back, six bar comb with wire frame and a very nicely tapered oak wood handle (paint worn off). Well made and sturdy yet light weight it's fine construction suggests a high-end, city stable comb rather than the typical working man's farm and ranch comb.

Cost: $30 includes shipping (U.S. Only)

Another well made curry comb. It is of heavy, utilitarian construction with steel, solid back, six bar and with a narrow painted wood handle (paint worn off). It also has a mane comb attachment. This comb is very well made of an early but simple curry comb pattern typical of the Decker Co. A well known curry comb manufacturer from Keokuk Iowa since 1878. Made for the farm or ranch and not the typical city stable comb. Great for the barn and solidly constructed to last a long time.

Another well made curry comb. It is of a very heavy, utilitarian construction comb with steel, solid back, six bar and with a narrow tapered painted wood handle (paint worn off). It also has a rather unusual curved mane comb attachment. This comb is very well made and sturdy and very likely a "re-construction" of an old pattern (possibly an early Kohler or other maker's) comb that has had a heavy handle attached to it. Made for the farm or ranch and not the typical city stable comb. Great for the barn and well constructed to last for more than the 100 years it has already been around.

Still, well made and sturdy.

Original "period" Iron Stirrups, Great for reenactors!

CURRENTLY NONE AVAILABLE but KEEP CHECKING !! I ROUNTINELY GET THEM
Nice matching (nearly) pair of sturdy, original iron stirrups. I rode an identical pair of these on a CS McClellan of mine "many a mile" in the "old days". They work nicely. Not too heavy and fiit well with a modern foot. Interior deminsions are 4 3/4 inches with a three inch tread.
This pattern is found in large numbers in this part of the South but I believe them to be post war. They turn up quite frequently on old original Kilgore and Somerset saddles often in post war commercial saddle catalogs. Most certainly they are NOT CS makes. However, years ago a pair was excavated out of a CS camp in north Mississippi but that is the only single or pair of these with any kind of lineage to the war period I have ever seen. So I cannot draw any conclusions about them. I can only continue to speculate my opinion they are not war time makes. Still, they make an excellent pair of "period" civilian reenactor stirrups because of their similarities to period stirrups and, very importantly they safely fit most modern feet.

PHOTO: The photo shows an identical pair. The pair for sale is in much better condition than the photo.

A bargain at $75 including shipping.

Very nice Buena Vista Saddle of the original patent pattern (probably c. late 19th century to ?). Complete with characteristic and original Buena Vista wood stirrups. Leather dry but in good condition, minor repairs to some stitching.
Overall in excellent condition. Difficult to find one this complete and in this condition. Could be "rode". Would only need some conditioning to the leather.

$350 plus shipping!

Story of the Buena Vista: Made on “Wilbourne” (or “Wilburn”) trees. Also known as the “Wilbourn Saddle”, the Buena Vista saddle was never a Confederate pattern saddle however, it was a very common and popular commercial saddle pattern that was manufactured from 1883 until the early 1960's.
The Wilbourn/Buena Vista Saddle was invented by William Wilbourn of Virginia. Legends, folklore and possibly inaccurate information suggests the following story of the Buena Vista saddle: Apparently, Wilbourn served in the Confederate army during the war. Upon returning home he opened a saddle making shop in Lexington Virginia. In 1883, it is known he patented his “Wilbourn” saddle tree with the U.S. Patent Office. Its unique design involved the tapering of the tree at the base of the cantle for the comfort of the rider which was different from any other saddle tree of the time. Its wide, under-base at the gullet of the tree also made it particularly less stressful to the horses’s back. At some point, William’s son Samuel took over the business and moved the saddle operation from Lexington to Buena Vista, (Rockbridge County), Virginia. The company was called “The Wilbourn Saddle and Harness Factory” and subsequent saddles were renamed “Buena Vista saddles”.
The Wilbourn/Buena Vista saddle was often made and sold to outside contractors for finishing or even sold to individuals as “kits”, complete with leather and hardware. Made as late as the early 1960's they remained consistent in appearance throughout their history. Knock-offs are made today although the old original Buena Vista saddles were very durable and are occasionally still found in regular use.

EARLY RACING OR CHILD’s SADDLE: Not sure of the period of this saddle but it is a very small, light weight saddle with under padding. The seat is only nine inches at best. It could be a child’s saddle or maybe an early racing saddle. Either way a RARE one!!

Leather in dry, cracked condition, stirrup straps and stirrups missing. The canvas under padding and tree are sound. Great wall hanger!

ORIGINAL MEANA & CO. STOCK SADDLE!! In "WOW" condition!!

SORRY...THIS ONE IS SOLD!!! SOLD!!!!
According the the book, OLD COWBOY SADDLES & SPURS, By Grethchen and Mike Graham, the Frank Meanea Saddlery was in business in Cheyenne, Wy. in 1873. Frank Meanea was a pioneer in the mail order saddle business designing saddles and Cheyenne style chaps. His trees were made by his brother Theodore E Meanea of Denver Colo. Frank died in 1928.
This old style stock saddle is one of these famous Meanea Saddle Company products and may date to the early 1900's era.
The saddle is marked with the name and logo “F.A. Meana Maker Cheyenne, Wyo”. This apparently dates the saddle after 1881. The saddle (14" inch seat) and tree are in good condition complete with ox bow stirrups, long latigos and a strong girth of parachute cord. It has the #14 on the “on-side” jockey. The leather is a little dry and worn from use but still very, very flexible and overall, in GREAT, READY TO RIDE condition! The sheep skin underneath has been re done so is in excellent condition. There is minor rodent damage on the right front.

Great collectable or useable today! EVER WANTED TO OWN ONE OF THESE AUTHENTIC COWBOY ORIGINALS?....AND FROM A GREAT MAKER! Great relic from the America’’s old west past.

DAGUERREOTYPE OF CIVILIAN MAN OR BOY IN FROCK: Admittedly, I know nothing about photography. This Daguerreotype is a sixth plate glass negative (I think). The subject is a white male in his late teens or early twenties dressed in typical period attire of the mid-19th century. My observation from the clothing is that it is pre war about 1850's or so. The fancy design hard shell case has both front and back with red, padded interior and gold leaf design. The hinges are no longer intact but the case is in excellent condition. $40 including shipping.

Jack Ebberts made this and used it for years on his well known movie/reenacting horse "Slippery" (Jack was an excellent horseman as one needs to be to use one of these). Mouthpiece is 5 1/8 inch wide. Fully functional and sturdy. Needs cleaning but not pitted.

NEW PRICE!!! $40 includes shipping.

JACK EBBERTS COLLECTION: Jack Ebberts was a very close friend of mine. We reenacted together in the 1980's and early 90's, worked several movies together including some stunt work on one movie but knew each other from much earlier in our old rodeo days. An exceptional bull rider Jack made it to the International Finals Rodeo several times winning the Finals one time and riding several “un-rideable” bulls during his career. Jack lived a tough, colorful life. He was a good friend, a "stylish-Dandy", an exceptionally funny story teller, he was also fearless, a daredevil, an excellent horseman and had some of the most talented hands I have ever seen. He could build anything. In fact, he made most of his own cowboy boots, belts, knives, reenacting clothes, boots, kepi’s, accoutrements, bits and saddles. Jack died of a sudden, massive heart attack in 2005. His gear here (some of it made by his own hand) is being sold to help his widow in these tough economic times.

RARE condition! SOMERSET SADDLE (Mid-19th century!)

SOLD!!!!
Somerset Saddle: (1850's to late 19th century pattern)

Simply, one of the finest Somerset saddles I have ever seen! Includes "attached" wool schabraque (common to the mid-19th century period), scrolled fine leather padded seat, original leather covered stirrups, girth and hand tooled skirts. While the schbraque is moth damaged the russet leather skirts and the underpadding is in "excellent", like new condition.

This is all original with the padded leather (kip or fine calf skin) seat soft and pliable. Note the tooling on the skirts and the web girth. Given the condition of the leather I am reluctant to date this saddle but the pattern dates from the 1850's through late 19th century. Probably the earlier of the realm.

ALL ORIGINAL! NOT a Reproduction!! And, except for the schabraque it is like brand new! You will not find one in better condition anywhere!

Cost: $1000 includes shipping. U.S. Only!

19th Century Curry Comb #00

This is a late 19th to early 20th century curry comb NOT Civil War!
But, ...if you want a small light weight curry comb that fits very well into the saddle bags and, are not too concerned about being "spot on" authentic (but stilll want an original "period" curry comb) then this comb would work very well. It is a six bar comb of all metal construction 7 inches long by 5 inches wide. Very flat and very light weight. Perfect for the saddle bags. In excellent condition showing only surface rust.
I am not sure of their origins, make or time period. I used to find alot of these in Alabama and found they come in at least four patterns. One with knockers, some without, others with a swivel hoof pick and a mane comb (rarest).
      I have several of these.
Inexpensive! A "good-n" for only $22 including shippping and worth it!

STOCK SADDLE: Marked “HEISER, DENVER, COLO.”

STOCK SADDLE: Marked “HEISER, DENVER, COLO.” for the famous Hermann H Heiser Saddle Co.

A WONDERFUL COLLECTIBLE FROM A FAMOUS SADDLE MAKING FAMILY FROM OUR OLD WEST PAST!

According the the book, OLD COWBOY SADDLES & SPURS, By Grethchen and Mike Graham, the Hermann H Heiser was born in Germany in 1836. He immigrated to the US sometimes in the late 1850's beginning apprenticeship in the saddlery business in Wisconsin. In March 1864 he moved to Colorado working for and later owning various shops until he bought the William Merchant Shop on Blake Street in Denver. Hermann died in 1904 with annual sales of about $40,000 By 1917 family members had grown the business to over $600,000 in annual sales. That year, the saddlery merged with another family business to become the Hermann H Heisere Manufacturing & Selling Co. Around 1919 Ewald bought his brother’s interests in the saddlery and ran it intil1945 when he sold it to the Denver Dry Goods Co. They continued the Heiser name and trademark. In 1950 the Keyston Brothers bought the company and also kept the Heiser name and trademark. The Keyston Brothers were huge buying up several prosperous and old line saddleries over the years. Once the largest saddler maker on the pacific coast it is still in business today in Sparks Nevada.

This saddle is marked “HEISER, Denver Colo.”. It is unclear to me when this saddle was made. However, by its pattern, style and manufacturing components I would guess C. 1930-1940's likely while still under the family name and before the sellout to the Keyston Brothers.
It has a brass horn and brass “D” rings, 13 inch seat, high pommel rolls with repair to the right pommel. the underlying sheep skin is gone but it appears to have the original stirrups. All of the leather is stiff but sound showing the normal wear and age for a saddle of this period. Still, in very good condition and a wonderful collectible by a famous saddle making family from our old west past.

I sat in this the other day and now kinda hate to sell it. Very well made and comfortable!
Not sure where this came from. It is part of a large historic saddle collection being purged from an long time collector in Memphis.

Leather Covered 1904 tree

Most certainly a M1904 tree underneath the leather. This was likely a catalog saddle using a surplus tree. I cannot say for sure cause I do not know. The tree is sound but the leather is dry and falling off.

It has the makers name and other information on it.... as follows....

W. Timmons & Sons
1
Warranted
(?) Hammer

I dont remember where I got this but it was well over 20 years ago.
Probably not useful for most of us but a neat item for collecting.

Dr Caldwell's Laxative Medicine Bottle

Traded this years ago from a bottle guy. This was excavated out of Augusta Mississippi, an old town site in SE Mississippi. This was the "Piney Woods" area, a remote area of the state during the Civil War. Augusta the local hub and Confederate headquarters from which the Confederate cavalry launched their 1863 raid to destroy Newt Knight"s bushwackers who lived in the so-called "Free State of Jones"
It is a mold bottle likely from the mid-19th century, 7 inches high, 2 1/4 inches wide, of clear glass. On the front (and side) it says "Dr W.B Caldwell's Laxative Senna". On the side " Monticello Illinois". I am not a "bottle guy" so cannot give you much more about it or its value.
Its a bit dirty inside but no doubt a really cool and old medicine bottle for a reenactor or a collector.

19th Century Period Iron Civilian Stirrups
ONLY ONE PAIR LEFT!!!

Matching (nearly) pair of pre and post war 19th century Civilian iron stirrups.

Both stirrups are the exact same pattern but one stirrup's tread measure 4 inches (interior width) and the other's the tread measures 3 3/4 inches. Otherwise the very same stirrups. Sturdy and well made the need a little cleaning up.

Great for your period relic saddle or for a reenactor. Priced right at $45 for the pair plus shipping.

Richmond Arsenal Officer's Bit, Rarest of the Rare!

Richmond Arsenal Officer's Bit, Rarest of the Rare!
REDUCED!!!
WOW! Finding these intact and complete with a curb chain is impossible (I know of only two others "out there" that are complete and not broken- NONE with its original curb chain). This bit was a Richmond Arsenal issue CS officer's bridle bit. Likely a Shay & Williamson (CS contractor) of North Carolina production item of 1863. This pattern was NEVER a western arsenal production item. Please see my article on this very bit in the "articles" section!
This bit was found near Chicamauga and may well have been brought to the area with Longstreet for the Chicamauga campaign. It came to me with a group of other bits most of them CS and attached to an old board but this one was supposedly found in a barn near the battelfield many years ago. It has the iron mouthpiece, brass cheeck pieces and a Britiish style curb chain often seen on period British military bits. It is NOT excavated but does show many years of rust including the curb chain rusted to the bit.
A bit pricey I know but, I cannot stress how rare this bit is. Most of the time these bits are excavated in Virginia broken into pieces because of their soft brass construction. A very few are found intact (I know of only two) and therefore a very desireable collector's piece.
The ultimate Confederate Army of Northern Virginia Officers saddlery collector's piece!

SIDE SADDLE c. 1850's - 1870's

SOLD!!!
SIDE SADDLE C. 1850's - 1870's. Early and old, saddler made- not a catalog saddle!

Great old Side Saddle for the Ladies! Enameled canvas seat and horn in good condition. Has fancy hand tooled skirt, missing right (off side) jockey. Stirrup strap is not original but the stirrup is an old side saddle stirrup. The tree is sound. The canvas covered under padding intact but fraying and needs work. Still, overall the leather is pliable but showing age. Another good repair project on a "getting hard to find" item.

IMPORTANT NOTE: These saddles are old! Sold as relics and therefore the leather and other parts are subject to fail. If you are rebuilding this saddle to ride, I strongly recommend you closely examine these saddles then make appropriate alterations such as new girthing, stirrup straps, etc. I also strongly recommend that you enlist the services of a competent saddler to do so.
Sold as is. I cannot guarantee this saddle whatsoever but especially without the above changes. These are good saddles but if you ride them you do so at your own risk.

Typical "catalog" Side Saddle Stirrup

This is an early-mid 19th century pattern stirrup but could still be found in the artwork of many late 19th century catalog side saddles. Called a "toe" or "slipper" stirrup only the toe or from portion of the ladies (very small) foot would go into it.
A collector's item for your side saddle display! It measures 3 1/2 inches long by 3 1/2 inches wide and 3 1/4 inches high. (So, not for you modern reenacting gals unless you have very small feet)

Saddle tree from the Famous Meanea Saddle Co!

SOLD!!
OLD COWBOY SADDLE TREE
from the famous MEANEA SADDLE CO. !!

This old style stock saddle tree is one of these famous Meanea Saddle Company products and may date to the 1920's era. The 14" inch tree is in good condition with only a small split in the rawhide on the right rear bar. It has the #129 on back of cantle and unclear lettering on the wood of the cantle underneath the rawhide at the cantle rear. The remnant leather saddle seat is in good condition and marked with the name and logo “F.A. Meana Maker Cheyenne, Wyo”. This apparently dates the saddle after 1881.
EVER WANTED TO OWN ONE OF THESE COWBOY ORIGINALS? Want it as a wall hanger or to have it rebuilt?
A great relic by a famous saddle maker from America’s old west past!! Sold as is.

Original CS Cav. Ordnance Inspec. Reports

UPDATED!! "NEW" REPORTS NOW AVAILABLE!!

On February 26, 1864, AIGO Order 46 ½ authorized subordinate offices in the Adjutant & Inspector’s General’s Office to undertake special duties. One of the offices created at that time was the Office of Inspection. Prior to this, official War Department inspections of cavalry appear to have been ordered only on a random basis as necessity demanded. On April 4, 1864, Col. Robert H. Chilton was assigned the task of organizing and implementing a system of inspection duties and reports in the armies and staff departments. However, it was not until the late summer of 1864 that uniform forms were prepared and regular inspections of the cavalry appear to have been implemented. Unfortunately, the chaos of the military situation at that late point in the war and the mobile nature of cavalry caused some commands to be inspected on several occasions and others not at all. This was particularly true in the west were only a handful of official inspections were made at all and apparently none after August 1864.
Many of the following cavalry inspection reports were made of the cavalry during this period in 1864, however, numerous other reports available here are from earlier periods. Some are surprisingly complete. They are listed as they are found, either by individual regiments or at division level as with most Army of Northern Virginia cavalry commands or,..... under the numerical designation or name of the individual unit’s commanding officers, as was the case with most cavalry commands in the west.

The information found here can be incredibly enlightening. Most include important data such as the aggregate number of men officially on duty in the command, the number of men present at the inspection, the type and calibre of their arms and the amount of ammunition on hand. It also includes the number of “deficiencies” in the command for accoutrements, horse equipment, various articles of clothing, camp and garrison equipment.

NOTE: All available Inspection Reports for each unit are included. Each report has been edited and restructured for easy reading and reference including relative comparison percentages. However, all important numerical data has been transposed and categorized exactly as they were found on the original report written during the war.
Please be aware that these reports represent only a snapshot of a particular cavalry command on a given date and therefore not meant to represent all cavalry, that particular unit or any other, during any other period of the war.

Unfortunately, the cost of purchasing, compiling and editing these reports was a difficult, extremely expensive and time consuming task. Therefore, to obtain a copy the author must humbly ask for a fee to partially defray the cost of this research.

$20 (maximum) For each individual western cavalry command or... each individual Army of Northern Virginia Regiment or "Brigade" grouping (includes all Regt’s of that brigade). Lengthy reports are $20 but I note that shorter ones are even more reasonable at ONLY $10. Inquire.

Each of the following reports listed below can be purchased through our store.

Confederate Spanish Moss Carbine Sling -

OUT OF STOCK!!!!! NOT LIKELY I WILL HAVE ANY OF THESE FOR SOME TIME TO COME....Inquire....
Pattern copied from an original in a private collection.
Hand spun and woven Spanish Moss sling (regulation size) reproduced just as they were done over 130 years ago by the Confederacy. Hardware includes hand forged frame buckle.
They have been field tested, are comfortable (not scratchy) and serviceable (NOTE: They will not wear as long as a leather article). The cost of these are obviously higher than the leather ones but they are extremely labor intensive to make requiring about 6 hours of hand work per sling. Moreover, only one person in the country is making these right now so they are rare, few and hard to get.

PLAIN: Without any snap hook attachment. Includes only the Spanish Moss sling and hand forged frame buckle. You provide you own snap hook (The Federal one is BEST!)
Shipping extra and dependent upon location.

NOTE: Due to their labor intensive manufacturing these items are sometimes difficult to get quickly from our supplier therefore, in fairness to you please contact me via email for availability and delivery times.

This saddle has seen better days but the tree is sound and in very good condition. Obviously a re-build project or maybe a wall-hanger. The steel horn in intact but the leather is almost entirely gone. Could be re-rawhided and rebuilt into a very fine riding saddle or Cowboy Action saddle. Shipping costs EXTRA and depends upon location.

Mosby Saddle: C. 1880's to 1920

SORRY...THIS ONE IS SOLD!!!
MOSBY SADDLE: C. 1880's-1920. These were a very popular late 19th century catalog item named after the famous Confederate partison ranger, John S Mosby (see my article "19th Century Commmerical & Catalog Saddles"). This one is missing its stirrups and stirrup straps. The leather dry rotted but tree is sound. Note the signature Mosby leather loop on pommel used for loopping halter lead or reins.
A great wall hanger relic or buy it for a re-build.

Sold as is. I cannot guarantee these saddles whatsoever but especially without the above changes. These are good saddles but if you ride them you do so at your own risk.

STOCK SADDLE: Marked (very faintly) “E.C.Lee Maker, Pierre So. Dak.” This saddler issued their 20th catalog in 1927.
Saddle has a 13 inch seat. Appears to have the original stirrups, Girth strap intact but missing cinch. Sheep skin failing but about 70% intact. Iron horn. Leather dry, worn but in good condition. Some latigos intact others not.

Probably one of the most comfortable (for me anyway) saddles I have ever sat it. A great "repair to ride" saddle or a wall hanger.

*Shipping cost depends upon location.

Old Cowboy "Texas" Saddle, c. 1870's - 1890's

OLD COWBOY “TEXAS” SADDLE!!
EARLY PATTERN

TEXAS SADDLE. C. 1870's- 1900. Early “Texas” style tree and pattern with wooden horn.
This is a really cool saddle. It has features of the early patterns including tree pattern, skirting, seat treatment and rigging (single rigged and lacking the later model SamStagg rigging). However, some split rivets employed on the original fenders indicates its manufacture as of the mid to late 1870's AT EARLIEST! Split rivets were not invented until 1871. It might be a custom make or, could be a catalog saddle. I don’t know but as a saddle historian I have a collection of over 20 saddle catalogs dating from the 1870's to 1930's and I have been unable to find anything like it.

Leather covered wooden horn shows a lot of hard use. In fact, the wooden horn is broken but held together with the leather wrapping. Single rigged saddle with a 3/4 seat. Originally hand stitched. Includes some obvious post manufacture decorations and add-ons such as flower tacks, military loops and horse shoe buckles. Leather is plain showing some decorative creasing but no tooling. Leather is dry and cracked but not rotting. Well used, lots of minor repairs throughout. Missing only the girths and cinches.

NOTE: This is a collectible and not for riding.
